What Is A Pre-Operative Medical Clearance?
A pre-operative medical clearance is an evaluation performed before surgery to help determine whether a patient is medically optimized for the planned procedure. Depending on your surgeon’s requirements and medical history, the evaluation may include a physical examination, review of medical history and medications, blood work, EKG and additional testing when indicated.

What's Included in a Pre-Op Evaluation?
Your pre-operative evaluation is based on your surgeon’s requirements, planned procedure and medical history. Depending on what is required for your surgery, your evaluation may include:
Medical History Review — Review of current health conditions, medications, allergies and relevant surgical history.
Physical Examination & Vitals — A focused medical examination with blood pressure, heart rate and other required vital signs.
Pre-Operative Blood Work — Required laboratory testing based on your surgeon’s orders and procedure.
EKG When Required — On-site electrocardiogram for patients whose surgeon or medical history requires cardiac screening.
Provider Review — Your examination and available test results are reviewed by a licensed medical provider to determine whether additional evaluation is needed before surgery.
Clearance Documentation — Completed medical clearance documentation is provided according to your surgeon’s requirements when medically appropriate.
How the Pre-Op Clearance Process Works

2. Complete Your Evaluation
We review your medical history, medications and surgical requirements and complete your physical examination and vital signs.
3. Complete Required Testing
Blood work, EKG and other required testing are completed or coordinated based on your surgeon’s requirements.
4. Provider Review
A licensed medical provider reviews your examination and available test results. If anything requires additional evaluation, our team will explain the next steps.
5. Clearance Documentation
When medically appropriate, your completed clearance documentation is prepared and can be sent to your surgeon’s office according to their requirements.
How to Prepare for Your Pre-Operative Appointment
To help your appointment go smoothly and avoid delays, please review the following before arriving.
- If fasting is required for your ordered blood work, fast for 8–10 hours before your appointment. Water is encouraged during the fasting period unless otherwise instructed by your surgeon or medical provider.
- Bring a light snack to eat immediately after your blood draw to help reduce the risk of dizziness or lightheadedness.
- Stay well hydrated. Drinking plenty of water before your appointment helps make blood collection easier.
- Continue taking your prescribed medications unless your surgeon or prescribing provider instructs otherwise.
- Bring a complete list of all medications, vitamins, supplements, and herbal products you currently take.
- Bring your surgeon's pre-operative clearance paperwork and any laboratory orders or instructions provided by the surgical office.
- Bring a valid government-issued photo ID.
- Remove necklaces, chest jewelry, piercings, smart watches, or other metal accessories before your EKG, as they may interfere with proper electrode placement and electrical readings.
- Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to your upper arm for blood pressure measurement and your chest for EKG lead placement.
- Arrive 10–15 minutes early to complete any remaining paperwork.

No. Scheduling and paying for a pre-operative evaluation does not guarantee medical clearance. The purpose of the evaluation is to determine whether you are medically optimized to proceed with your planned surgery. If your provider identifies a concern, additional testing, medical records, treatment or evaluation by another healthcare provider may be required before a clearance decision can be made.
If abnormal findings are identified, our provider will explain the results and discuss the next steps. Depending on your situation, additional testing, treatment, repeat laboratory work, specialist evaluation, or follow-up care may be recommended before clearance can be completed.
Patients can help prepare by following fasting instructions, drinking plenty of water, bringing all required paperwork, taking prescribed medications as directed, following the surgeon’s pre-operative instructions, completing laboratory testing promptly, and avoiding nicotine products if advised by the surgeon. No medical provider can guarantee surgical clearance prior to completing the medical evaluation.

Most clearance letters are completed within 24–48 hours after all required laboratory results have been received. Expedited turnaround may be available for an additional fee.
